Valencia vs Barcelona Preview: Can Los Che Shock the Catalans Again ?

Barcelona return to Mestalla on Sunday with a perfect La Liga record, but also with a very recent warning of what Valencia can do at their historic home.

The last time these teams met at the stadium, on May 23, 2026, Valencia recovered from falling behind to beat the champions 3–1. They achieved it with only 24 per cent possession, punishing a Barcelona side that controlled the ball without controlling the decisive moments.

That result gives Carlos Corberán’s team a source of belief. The wider evidence, however, points strongly to the visitors. Hansi Flick’s Barcelona have opened the 2026/27 campaign with three victories, 12 goals scored, and only two conceded. Valencia, by contrast, have taken just one point from three matches and have scored only once.

Match details

  • Competition: La Liga, Matchday 4

  • Fixture: Valencia CF vs FC Barcelona

  • Date: Sunday, September 6, 2026

  • Kickoff: 4:15 PM CEST / 3:15 PM BST / 8:15 PM Bangladesh time

  • Venue: Mestalla, Valencia

The occasion carries extra historical weight. Barcelona describe the match as their final scheduled visit to Mestalla, provided Valencia’s planned move to Nou Mestalla goes ahead for the 2027/28 season. Opened in 1923, Mestalla has staged more than a century of Spanish football and has rarely been a comfortable destination for visiting teams.

Contrasting starts the season.

Valencia began with a goalless draw at home to Celta Vigo before suffering consecutive defeats: 1–0 against Real Betis and 3–1 away to Deportivo. Their record after three matches stands at no wins, one draw and two losses, with one goal scored and four conceded.

Corberán therefore needs a response—not only in the result, but also in the level of performance. Ahead of the game, the Valencia coach said the supporters want to see the team compete and that his squad wants to “redeem themselves.” A packed and emotionally charged Mestalla could help produce the intensity Valencia needs.

Barcelona’s start could hardly be more different. Flick’s side opened with a 5–0 away win over Elche, followed it with a 2–0 victory against Athletic Club, and then defeated Rayo Vallecano 5–2. Nine points from nine have put the defending champions at the top of the table, with a league-best goal difference of plus ten at the time of writing.

Their scoring has also been consistent: Barcelona have struck at least twice in every league game this season and are averaging four goals per match.

Recent head-to-head record

Valencia’s 3–1 win in May ended a punishing sequence against Flick’s Barcelona. Across the five meetings between the teams under the German coach, Barça has won four and lost one, scoring 20 goals—an average of four per game.

Those results were

  • Valencia 1–2 Barcelona

  • Barcelona 7–1 Valencia

  • Valencia 0–5 Barcelona, Copa del Rey

  • Barcelona 6–0 Valencia

  • Valencia 3–1 Barcelona

The numbers make Barcelona a clear favorite, but the most recent result prevents complacency. Valencia have already shown that they do not need much of the ball to hurt the Catalans.

Team news

Lamine Yamal did not complete Barcelona’s final training session with the group after taking a knock. Flick described the separate work as precautionary and confirmed that the winger would travel, leaving him in contention to play.

There was better news concerning Gavi and the new signing of Gabriel Jesus. Both completed Friday’s full group session. Flick indicated that Jesus is not yet at 100 percent but could make his Barcelona debut from the bench, depending on how the match develops.

Official starting line-ups had not been announced at the time of publication. Any late fitness decision involving Lamine could materially affect Barcelona’s right-sided threat and Valencia’s defensive plan.

Tactical analysis: where the game could be won

Valencia must survive the first wave.

Barcelona have combined aggressive pressing with fast, high-quality attacking football. Valencia cannot afford careless passes close to their penalty area or a passive opening that allows the visitors to establish rhythm. Corberán’s side will need compact distances between defense and midfield, disciplined protection of the half-spaces, and a reliable outlet when they recover possession.

The hosts’ best route may resemble the May victory: accept long spells without the ball, defend the central zones, and attack quickly before Barcelona can restore their structure. Set pieces could also offer Valencia valuable opportunities in a game where open-play chances may be limited.

Barcelona must control transitions.

For Barcelona, the central challenge is not creating possession but using it without becoming exposed. Their technical superiority should allow them to dominate territory. The danger comes when too many players move ahead of the ball and a turnover leaves space behind the full-backs or around the defensive line.

Patient circulation, immediate counter-pressing, and sharp movement around the penalty area should eventually test a Valencia defense that has conceded four times in three matches. If Barcelona score first and force Valencia to abandon their compact shape, the visitors’ attacking depth could become decisive.

Players to watch

Raphinha has begun the season as Barcelona’s leading scorer and remains central to Flick’s pressing structure. His movement, speed, and willingness to initiate pressure can make him dangerous both with and without the ball.

Lamine Yamal, if cleared to start, gives Barça a one-on-one threat capable of breaking a low block and turning a controlled spell of possession into a clear chance. His fitness will be one of the major pre-match storylines.

For Valencia, Javi Guerra carries confidence from scoring in the 3–1 win in May. His ability to compete in midfield and then arrive in attacking areas could be important if the hosts are to threaten in transition.

Key statistics

  • Barcelona have won all three of their La Liga matches this season.

  • The visitors have scored 12 goals and conceded two.

  • Valencia have collected one point and scored once in three matches.

  • Barcelona have won four of their last five meetings with Valencia in all competitions.

  • Flick’s Barça have scored 20 goals in five matches against Valencia.

  • Valencia won 3-1 in the latest meeting, despite having only 24 per cent possession.

  • Barcelona have scored at least twice in each of their opening three league matches.

Prediction

Mestalla, the memory of May’s upset and Valencia’s need for a response should make the match more demanding than the league table suggests. Corberán’s side has a plausible route through compact defending, quick transitions, and set pieces.

Even so, the contrast in current form is too large to ignore. Barcelona possess more attacking quality, have scored freely from the opening weekend, and should create enough chances to win if they manage Valencia’s counterattacks responsibly.

Prediction: Valencia 1–3 Barcelona.
